The purpose of this paper is to inspect how Bollnow's understanding of Montessori is related to his concept of awakening and to study the significance of his understanding of Montessori in his whole conception of pedagogy. The significance of understanding of Montessori in Bollnow's pedagogy is the following. First, Bollnow grasps uncontinuous phenomena in intellectual sphere and spiritual development in Montessori's pedagogy as the awakening. He thinks that uncontinuous phenomena like religious reform are also in spiritual development of children and he explains that by the concentrating phenomenon of Montessori. Secondly, Bollnow suggests that the awakening means the basis of uncontinuous forms of education. When Bollnow studies the relation between existence-philosophy and pedagogy, the key is the concept of awakening. Because Bollnow's educational thought is influenced by the appealing character of Jaspers' existence-philosophy and Bollnow grasps the awakening concept of Spranger as the existential concept. Thirdly, the continuous phenomenon of growth which appears after the uncontinuous phenomenon of waking in Montessori's pedagogy suggests a sign of new continuous form of education in Bollnow's later theory of educational atmosphere.
