Twelve weeks old female BALB/c inbred mice were divided into two groups: a group has given voluntary running exercise (exercise group) and a non-exercise group (control group). Exercise consisted of spontaneous running in wheels 3 days per week for 8 weeks. The levels of nitric oxide and interleukin (IL)-1β production by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated peritoneal macrophages from the exercise group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Concanavalin A (Con A)-induced cell proliferation of the spleen in the exercise group was significantly higher than that in the control group. IL-2 and interferon-γ productions stimulated by Con A in the exercise group were significantly increased compared with the control group, but not IL-4 production.
